Dance Prelude (Gr. 5)
was dedicated to the Central Missouri State University Concert Band under the direction of Dr. Russell Coleman. It was commissioned by the Epsilon Gamma Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha at CMSU. The premiere was on April 25, 1978 with Claude T. Smith conducting. "Dance Prelude" develops intricate rhythmic patterns and creates a unique harmonic texture through unusual symphonic band scoring. This work is not only exciting and spectacular for the performer but also for the audience.

Moresca: A Symphonic Pantomime (Gr. 5)
was commissioned by the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, James Saker, Conductor. Its premiere performance was February 28, 1980, by the University of Nebraska at Omaha Symphonic Wind Ensemble. This work is a skillful blend of both the medieval Spanish dance form and contemporary ballet. Through a set of dance variations which contrast in mood and meter, the work unfolds through challenging rhythmic patterns and interwoven individual parts which challenge each instrument, especially the percussionists. The creative use of repetition assists in the process of teaching and learning the piece. This is truly one of the most skillful compositions written by Claude T. Smith.

Prelude and Toccata (Gr. 5)
was commissioned by the VanderCook College Band, Victor Zajec, conductor, to commemorate the 41st Anniversary of the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. It was performed at this convention in 1987, the same week which Claude T. Smith passed away. This is an extremely difficult piece with a bass clarinet cadenza and solos for the alto saxophone and flute. This is one of Claude's most difficult later works and will be a challenge for outstanding high school, university and professional bands.

was commissioned by the West Virginia Bandmaster's Association for the West Virginia All-State Band. The premiere was March 22, 1986 at West Virginia University, Claude T. Smith conducting. Contrasting tempos and timbres result in the rhythmic excitement in this work. This selection is particularly demanding for percussionists and has an added meter challenge in 1/4 time. This work is well-suited for contest performances.

Silver Salutation (Gr. 5)
was commissioned by the Duncan Music Company, Winston-Salem, NC for their 25th anniversary. The premiere performance was February 14, 1982 by the All-State High School Band, Northwest District North Carolina at Boone, NC with Claude T. Smith conducting. This spirited overture begins with a trumpet solo with additional solo opportunities for flute, trombone, clarinet and french horn. The saxophone, flute/oboe and percussion sections are also featured. The challenges in this piece, which will justify the "5" rating, are fourteen meter changes and eight tempo changes. The concert keys begin in Eb, followed by F, Db, Eb, F and Ab. This work lends itself to the accomplished high school and college ensembles.
